| 1:52 pm | Still Safe So Far ... A few of you contacted me, wanting to know if I'm okay. I'm still safe. The fires are to the North-East (~18 miles) and South-East (~19 miles) of me, so I'm in the one bubble of clean(er) air in San Diego. Above us is blue sky, and the horizon is smoky gray in every direction. Our light is still the right color, unlike the orange and red that people are reporting North of us. How am I? A little in denial and calm. A little worried. Apparently, this is shaping up to be the worst fire in California history. San Diego learned from the Cedar Fire, and this time around people are being evacuated way ahead of time (some 500,000+ estimated at the moment), risking fewer lives and injuries, which is a very good thing. Evacuations and poor air conditions are creeping closer to us, but we're still a safe distance away and have thought about potential escape routes should we need them. According to new reports, the smoke that's hovering over the ocean is about to be blown inland, so our bubble of relative clarity will disappear in a few hours. As long as that wind doesn't allow fires to merge with each other, there's a chance for our brave, much-appreciated firefighters to achieve some containment and place breaks. *hugs flist* I hope you and your loved ones are safe. |

| 5:52 pm | What shall we do with a drunken ... HELP, PLEASE. I'm putting on a program for my residents tomorrow that allows them to talk about their experiences (or lack of experiences) with alcohol. One thing that seems to come up a lot is Alcohol Poisoning. What is it? What's it look like? What should you do? What shouldn't you do? How do you tell the difference between a person who's drunk and can sleep it off, and a person who needs help? I have the textbook answers to most of these questions and a few stories from friends or my personal response, but I want to know, flist, what would you do if someone at a party showed signs of alcohol poisoning? I'm preparing cards that list common signs of alcohol poisoning, along with how to respond, and a short list of things NOT to do (things that will make matters worse), but I'm having a hard time anticipating a few of the actions that would sound like a good idea at the time. Any help you have to offer is appreciated. :o) Also ... any rumored "cures" for hangovers? Or alcohol myths you're familiar with? |

| 2:49 pm | Oxymorons of the Club Culture I admit it. I've never been to a straight 21+ club. In fact, I've never been to a straight club in general, aside from that one trip down to Tijuana that we'll never speak of again. My Mother's Opinions on the Issue: CIN: I went dancing again! MOM: Dancing? Oooh. Did you meet any boys? CIN: Er, yes. Lots of them. MOM: ... They're not straight, are they? CIN: *whistles innocently* MOM: Call me back when you've been to a straight club, dear. So, I actually TRIED. I swear that we did. We set out at 11pm to go *gasps* straight!clubbing. For the record, Chris and Pang are two of Tia's Straight Boys, and they decided to come along with us. I sort of feel like writing, but I don't want to go work with the bunnies that I have in progress. Not that any of you would take me up on it (:op), but I'll attempt drabbles or ficlets by request as long as it's for a fandom that I'm familiar with. | 5:38 pm | The White Culture ! / ? / ... I'd love to hear your thoughtful opinions on this ... What, if anything, is the white person's culture? Is there a distinction between "white" and "American" culture in the United States? If you're interested in hearing about the conversation that spurred this, let me know, and I'll talk to you about it in comments or AIM. I realize that "white" is an overly broad term when we consider ethnic heritages and that "white" is associated with countries other than the United States, but the wording of these questions is intentional so that they address a specific conversation that I engaged in for *glances at clock* two hours. |

( *Seeing Lestat on its Pre-Broadway tour. ) *spending quality time with my older brother *watching my grandmother smile as she watched Laws of Attraction for her first time *listening to my 94-yo grandfather alternately share stories of his youth and yell at my grandmother for being too loud ("Just shuddap!") when she demands that he be quieter so that she can hear the movie she's watching. *reading Naruto manga past anime canon so that I feel no guilt over being randomly spoiled through fanfic. The Lowest Points... *Never, ever, EVER open up one of those squishy bead pillows. Not that I speak from experience, but they contain billions of little charged styrofoam pellets that stick to skin and every other surface like a glove. You will continue to find said pellets in the most bizarre places even weeks after the initial contact. Or so I've heard. *Let's just not talk about grades. | 8:31 am | QAF Rant - no spoilers, please *pokes flist* Am I the only one who has had the willpower to resist the screeners through 513? WTF? Alright, folks. What's the point in spoiling yourselves before the season is officially over? Do you dislike your fandom so much that you want your experience over with asap? Or is it that you love your fandom so much that you simply had to see the rest and wanted to be done in time to chat with all of the others who are done so you can exit the fandom together? Yes, I know that it's amazingly tempting. Yes, I know that the screeners are available if you look for them (I've seen the links, but I resisted). To me, at least, there's a lot more fulfillment in seeing the show in real time and drawing out the last season (EVER!) in all of its emotions and possibilities. QAF has been more than just a quickie for me because viewing everything at once without fully processing or appreciating the slight details would cheapen the experience, imo. Looking forward to each new episode is part of what gets me through this miserable summer. Another part of that, however, was squeeing with fellow virgins, speculating, and viewing everything as shiny and new. I can't do that with many of my close friends now, which is something that I find to be disheartening. I was hoping that the QAF fandom would be around until after the series ended, but at the rate people are going, it seems that all of the discussions, fics, and lengthy goodbyes will have been done before I even get to finish the series itself. |

| 11:48 pm | Finally! I finished my last final (both of the o-chem [organic chemistry] sequence and my second year of college) at 10:15pm tonight. I promptly ate some cookie dough, called close friends, and spent twenty minutes talking to my mother afterward in an attempt to emulate every post-teen drama/movie I've ever seen. For the past few weeks, I've been studying my ass off (no, not literally *glances at rear*) and have felt too guilty to check my own flist. New revelations (non-o-chem-related): -I apparently bake to relieve stress. This would be dangerous, except that I generally alter recipes to be healthier than originally intended and they come out really well. Of course, this can occasionally backfire. Whole-wheat/splenda almond cookie anyone? Um, yes. -Old, scary men are somehow attracted to me as a rule. A few weeks ago, the Hummus vendor (a balding man somewhere in his late 40's or even 50's) at our Farmer's Market asked me out to coffee. Upon declining and mentioning that I don't really drink coffee anyway, he then proceeded to creep me out further and stress that it wouldn't just be coffee. *shudders* Although older, this man is no potential Sugar Daddy. He doesn't even own the Hummus stand, it's his brother's. -I am a total OT3 shipper in HP. Just as when I moved from het to slash, I now hunger for something with further social complication and a greater challenge to canon and the fanfic author. It takes a really amazing author to pull off a believable, in-character OT3. My ship of choice seems to revolve around HP/DM/??, especially HP/HG/DM and HP/SS/DM. I've found some amazing HP/SS/DM fics, but I swear there is no well-written HP/HG/DM (unless I squint at DT, which doesn't really count... yet...). Sadly, those who write threesomes involving m/f/m tend to write short PWP's (which are usually OOC), have no knowledge of human anatomy and psychology, or attempt to write scary, must-keep-reading-because-surely-the-aut -I should really post some QAF fic soon... -Collective Soul continues to blow me away. Satellite, How Do You Love, and their new acoustic album have been on loop while I studied this past month. Rock Musicians Stringed Instruments = OTP -Being complete spoiler!virgins for S5 of QAF is wonderful. We (my suitemates and I) haven't seen the S5 preview and we shut off the program before we see the "next-on" section [if it still exists]. Every touch, small comment, and plot-line is fresh and exciting for us, and it's fucking amazing! :o) -Making the decision to put a pet (read: best friend of 15 years) to sleep is one of the hardest things I've done in my life. | 10:22 pm | QAF!dolls So today I was a total actress and engaged myself in an evil plot against hermionemalfoy for an early birthday surprise. Wesley, pyrobird, and I plotted behind her back and convinced her to leave the apartment (under the pretense of offering moral support to Wesley as he met an online love interest for the first time) while Charmaine and I baked a dark chocolate cake, prepared her presents, and cleaned the apartment. She came back to a table full of gifts, friends who were incredibly guilty, and a carefully prepared Voodoo!Ethan Doll.You must go look and disregard any similarities to certain hobbits. For future reference, it is incredibly hard to find a male doll with long hair. Charmaine and I slaved over finding one and sympathize with any little girls or boys who have obviously given up and used drag!Barbie instead.
